This Sunday, the big stage beckons. Apollo Projects Stadium will host the most anticipated double-header of the season. First cab off the rank, New Brighton will take on UC for the Southern Alps Ultra U85kg, the competition now in its second year, set to deliver fast paced and thrilling action. Come 2:45pm Linwood and Marist Albion take centre stage, facing off in a clash that promises heart, history, and high-stakes rugby. With a huge crowd expected, the call goes out to the entire Canterbury rugby community — get there, get loud, and get behind your team.
Both clubs enter the Bascik Transport Premier Men’s decider with deep purpose, proud identities, and powerful stories driving them forward.
For Linwood coach Brendan Nolan, this season has been about far more than results. It's been about connection — to each other, their supporters, and those who came before them. “We’re driven by more than just winning. It’s about pride, purpose, and recognising what families give up so we can be here,” Nolan said.
The tone was set early in the season with a powerful pre-season trip to Kaikōura, where the team paid tribute to the late Tane Norton. That moment bonded the group in spirit and intent. Since then, their journey has been fuelled by storytelling, waiata, Fijian hymn and Samoan mili mili — forming an unbreakable brotherhood.
On the field, Linwood have become known for their toughness and accuracy —particularly in the red zone. “We play for each other and will go the full 80.We find a way,” Nolan says.
The message to fans? Expect “effort on top of effort on top of effort. We’ve made a lot of people happy this season. There’s a real sense of belonging to something bigger than the game.”
For Marist Albion, the path to the final has been about redemption, legacy, and lighting it up with expansive footy. Captain Gus Farnan says last year’s heart-breaking semifinal exit at home lit a fire in the squad that hasn’t gone out. “We kept our core and came back this year with more fight, hunger and desire,” he said.
It’s paid off. This year’s Marist Albions side blends experience with emerging talent — and they play fast. “We pride ourselves on playing exciting rugby, especially on transition,” said Farnan. Veterans like Filipo Veamatahu, Elliot Smith, and Stevie Phillips have guided the way, allowing young guns like Frankie Meates and Maretino Kaladou to really step up and develop their game.
Coach Ross Kennedy says the team’s mission has been personal from the start. “Our goal was to return ‘home’ to the green fence of Rugby Park — a spiritual place for our club.” While the final is being played at Apollo, the opportunity is just as symbolic. “It’s a cool and unique moment for both clubs.”
Under pressure, Marist Albion are clear on who they are. “Our DNA is fast, attacking rugby,” Kennedy said. “We need the courage to stick to that, even under the heat of finals footy.”
And the motivation? “Our club has a proud legacy, and this team has the chance to carve itself into that history. We want our people to be proud of us — to see the toughness and courage we’ve shown all season one more time, on the biggest stage.”
Stephen Smith Managing Director at Moa Brewing and naming rights partner of the Southern Alps Ultra U85kg competition is thrilled to see its first Rugby Final be played at Apollo Projects Stadium. “It’s a great initiative to give these players a taste of playing on this special turf”. One of the fastest growing grades in the country, Smith doesn’t see it stopping here, “This is the start of developing this exciting grade further across the Canterbury region.” With a brand new bespoke trophy up for grabs, Moa Brewing Company is also putting up a prize worth over $15,000 for the winning club. There’s plenty on the line to play for, and ample fight in both contenders, this fixture is not one to miss!
Passion, pride, and two epic match ups who’ve earned their shot at glory. It all kicks off from 12:15pm, food and beverage will be available, AND it’s free entry!
