With the representative season in full swing, players from all over Canterbury are pulling on the red and black or sub union jerseys each week and delivering strong performances across the South Island in their respective competitions.

From our U16 teams through to the U20s, there are plenty of opportunities for Canterbury players to represent their province with these pathways continuing to provide valuable steps towards higher honours of the game.

Canterbury B

The Canterbury B side will be assembled over the coming week, with selection underway for a four-match campaign. A large depth of senior players who have stood out throughout the club season and the Tane Norton Cup have put their hands up for selection, with the side set to take on Tasman on 12 September, followed by matches against Southland, Otago and Auckland.

 
U20s

New to the representative programme this year, the Canterbury U20s are competing in the South Island U20 competition and providing another important pathway into NPC rugby. Community Rugby Manager Michael Sheat says it has been fantastic to see the pathway working in action. “Having two teams, both the U19 and U20, competing in the tournament has been awesome. Many of these young players have been involved in the Canterbury NPC wider training group, including Max Fale, who is set to make his debut this weekend against Waikato in Hamilton. It’s reassuring to see these pathways working and giving our young people the chance to step up. Many of these players have moved through these teams and have gone on to be offered full contracts.”

Halfway through their campaign, the U20s sit at one win and one loss, with a convincing 69–19 victory over Southland last weekend. With matches against Tasman, Wellington and Otago still to come, the side will be looking to build on that momentum.

 
U19s

The U19s remain unbeaten after impressive wins over the U20's, 33-24, Tasman, 55–19, and Southland, 77–0. The side will play a friendly fixture against a Cantabrians U23 team this weekend before heading into their final match of the campaign against Otago in Timaru next week. A win would likely secure the title.

Looking ahead, a representative team will be selected from eligible U19 and U20 players to travel north and take on Auckland on 26 September.

U18 Girls

For our young wāhine, the campaign kicks off in historic fashion next weekend, with the first female representative fixture to be played at our new home, One New Zealand Stadium. The Canterbury Red and Black sides will go head-to-head as the curtain-raiser to the NPC home match against Wellington. Michael Sheat says the players are excited about the opportunity. “It would be fair to say the girls are absolutely fizzed at this opportunity. For many of them, playing in a facility like OneNew Zealand Stadium, on the same field as some of their idols, is something they would only dream of. We’re really proud to be connecting our grassroots and high-performance teams and making it a place for everyone.”

Following the historic fixture, both teams will play a Tasman U18 side before heading to Timaru for the South Island Tournament from 1–3 October.

U18 Boys

There are plenty of opportunities for our younger players to pull on the red and black jersey, with the U18 Boys set to begin their two-match campaign next month.
The side will face Tasman in Kaikōura before taking on a Highlanders U18 side in Timaru.

U16 Boys

Pre-tournament matches are taking place over the next couple of weeks as our four Canterbury teams, Metro Red, Metro Black,Ellesmere and North Canterbury prepare for the South Island U16 Tournament. The tournament will bring together 16 teams fromacross the South Island and will be hosted by Waihora RFC from 4–6 October.

It’s an exciting time for Canterbury representative rugby with the red and black pathways continuing to create opportunities for players to progress through the game.
