What a way to start the Bascik Transport Metro Competitions, by revisiting the pinnacle of club rugby season with 2025’s top two men’s teams facing each other on the paddock once again – and it did not disappoint.
Linwood Rugby Club, Metro Finalists for two years running, met Marist Albion on the field last week in an epic rematch of last years final. The home side were up 21 -7 at half time, only to have Marist Albion make a huge comeback in the second 40, ending in 31-31 draw meaning Marist Albion will retain the DCL Shield.
Michael Sheat, Canterbury Rugby Community Manager says the game was a strong advertisement for the competition, “Both sides brought real physicality alongside quality skill, and the DCL Shield match reflected that same intensity, with neither team prepared to give an inch”.
The excitement extends to the Bascik Transport Canterbury Women's Premier and Premier Reserve grades who have both seen new addtions this season.
“It’s great to see continued growth in community participation within the women’s game with more clubs and players getting involved each season” said Sheat, “The inclusion of Christchurch getting back into the Premier grade, alongside Ashley and Ōtautahi entering teams in the Premier Reserve grade, reflects a real appetite for involvement and shows how the game is reaching more communities across the region”.
Bascik Transport recently re-signed as Major grassroots Partner of Canterbury Rugby, Managing Director Tony Bascik said he is proud of his company’s involvement with the competition, and the opportunity it gives Bascik Transport to give back to the community they are part of.

Let's not forget our Metro Classics grade! With ten teams of "experienced campaigners" hitting the grass each week and connecting over 80 minutes of code, it's fantastic to see the spirit of the game alive and well across all age groups.
Because we know you can’t be at two (or nine) places at once, keep up with all the draws and scores across the season here.
