2026 Representative Rugby Season Underway
After an exciting club rugby season across the Canterbury region, it is great to see representative rugby now getting underway, with a number of players from across our clubs selected to pull on their sub-union and representative jerseys. These teams provide an important pathway for players to test themselves at a higher level, earn selection for Canterbury representative sides and continue their journey towards higher honours. We look forward to following our players and teams throughout the 2026 representative season.
Tane Norton Trophy
The Tane Norton Trophy is already underway, with two rounds played and both the Cavaliers and Waitaha remaining unbeaten.
Last weekend saw representative rugby take the field at One NZ Stadium for the first time, with Waitaha taking on Ellesmere under the roof. In front of a loud and passionate crowd, Waitaha came away with the win, marking a memorable occasion for everyone involved.
The action continues this weekend with the Tane Norton Trophy Gala Day at Kirwee Rugby Club. Canterbury Pasifika will take on North Canterbury, while Ellesmere will face the Cavaliers as the competition heats up.
Waitaha will also hit the road this weekend, travelling to Wellington Maori Rugby Te Upoko o te Ika Invitational Tournament, where they will take on some of the best Maori representative sides from further afield, taking on Poverty Bay Maori on Friday and Wellington Maori on Saturday.
Canterbury Under 19s & Under 20s
There was plenty of local rivalry on show last weekend when the Canterbury Under 19s claimed an upset win over the Canterbury Under 20s.
Both sides now turn their attention to the South Island Under 20 Tournament, with the teams heading in different directions for their next challenges. The Under 19s will travel to Kaikōura to take on Tasman, while the Under 20s head south to Oamaru to face Southland.
With plenty of talent across both squads, the tournament will provide another valuable opportunity for these players to test themselves against some of the best young rugby talent from around the South Island.
Canterbury Sub-Unions Representative Sides
There is a huge number of Canterbury sub-union teams taking the field across representative competitions this season, providing opportunities for players from right across our region to represent their communities and continue their rugby journey.
Check out the draw below to see when and where your local sub-union is playing, and get along to support them!
