All Roads Lead to Prebbleton: The Battle awaits

It all comes down to this. After months of hard work, grit, and growth, Southbridge and Darfield are ready to collide in Saturday’s Luisetti Seeds Ellesmere Div1 Coleman Shield Final — a marquee clash set to light up Finals Day in Prebbleton. Both clubs bring rich tradition and passionate support into this matchup, and are driven by more than just silverware — they’re fuelled by legacy, loyalty, and the pride of their communities.

For Darfield head coach Chris Lea, the journey to the final has been about one thing: continuous improvement. “Understanding where we need to improve each week and really focusing on that to a high standard is what’s been the driving force behind the team’s success ” Lea said.“That’s what’s brought us together.” Darfield’s identity is clear — resilient and relentless. “We play for each other and stay in the fight right until the end. That’s what we enjoy.”

When asked who’s really stepped up this season Lea acknowledged lock Ben Carter who’s had a standout year and “never takes a backward step.” Dynamic flanker JoeAdams also got a special mention, praised as one of the best over the ball in the comp, and Harrison Groundwater, captain and No. 12 whose game management has been a key pillar of the team’s success.

With a relaxed, tight-knit group vibe this week, Darfield are embracing the moment.“There’s definitely a bit of a buzz about the group,” said Lea. “We’re just happy to have another week together.”

But don’t mistake that calm for complacency — lifting the Coleman would be monumental.

“For us, it’s the club that wins the Coleman Shield, not just the team,” Lea added.“It would be a thank you to all the supporters, families, and committee members who put so much in. We really appreciate it.”

Across the halfway line, Southbridge are equally motivated — not just by the prize on the line, but by what it represents. “Next year marks our club’s 150th anniversary,” said captain Sam Scott. “Having the Coleman Shield in our clubrooms next year during those celebrations would be incredibly special.” Scott credits a strong team culture and deep bonds for Southbridge’s success.“Everyone gets along on and off the field. We dig deep when it matters most —it’s been a full squad effort to get here.”

Coach Mike Rowe echoed that sentiment, highlighting the growth the team has shown since a tough loss in the Combined Comp quarter-final.

“That moment brought us closer. We’ve worked hard to reset, improve, and have had a lot of laughs along the way. There’s a great balance of hard grafters, powerful carriers, and entertainers who can put on a show.” While Rowe is reluctant to single out individuals, he says the collective effort has been key — and with finals experience across both players and management, the group is ready. “This is a goal we set back in March. Every time the boys walk into the changing shed, they see the honours board with photos of past Coleman Shield winners. This group wants to be up there too.”

As for Saturday? “We want to put on a performance the club can be proud of. At times we’ve played like the weather — unpredictable — but our loyal supporters deserve a spectacle they’ll talk about for years to come.”
