Canterbury Rugby is thrilled to confirm that one of its favourite sons, Canterbury Rugby Player 1626, Richie Mo’unga, will return to red and black for the 2026 and 2027 Bunnings Warehouse NPC seasons.
Mo’unga has signed an 18-month deal that will see him rejoin Canterbury in mid-2026, before linking back with the Crusaders for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season.
A proud product of Canterbury, Mo’unga has already made an indelible mark on the province with 51 appearances and four national provincial titles. He went on to achieve 109 caps and seven consecutive titles with the Crusaders, alongside 56 Test matches for the All Blacks, including two Rugby World Cups.
“Richie has deep roots with Christchurch and Canterbury, and we’re excited to see him back in red and black,” said Canterbury Rugby CEO Tony Smail. “He’s not only a remarkable player but a role model who has always carried himself with humility and professionalism. We know our fans will be delighted.”
Canterbury High Performance Manager Tim Hurst said Mo’unga’s return would be invaluable for the next generation of players coming through the system.
“Having someone of Richie’s calibre back in our environment will have a huge impact both on and off the field. His experience and leadership will lift those around him, and his connection to our region shows young players what’s possible when you commit to our pathway.”
“Christchurch is home for me, and Canterbury is where my rugby journey began. My family and I have really enjoyed our time in Japan, and I’m looking forward to another season with Toshiba before we return home. I can’t wait to pull on the red and black jersey again and represent the province that’s given me so much. Playing provincial rugby for Canterbury is always special, and I’m really excited to be back” said Mo’unga.
Mo’unga will complete his commitments in Japan before joining Canterbury mid-2026.
