Miles Toyota First XV Premiership Kicks Off for 2026

2025 Champions Christchurch Boys High School

The pinnacle of schoolboy rugby in Canterbury returns this weekend, as the Miles Toyota First XV Premiership gets underway for another highly anticipated season.

As the premier secondary school’s competition in the region, the Premiership showcases the very best of young rugby talent, with fierce rivalries, emerging stars, and proud school traditions all on display. For many players, this competition represents a crucial step in the rugby pathway- from grassroots to higher honours- and continues to play a defining role in shaping the future of the game in Canterbury.

Canterbury Rugby Community Manager Michael Sheat says the significance of the competition extends well beyond the scoreboard.

“The Miles Toyota First XV Premiership is the pinnacle of schoolboy rugby in our region. It’s where passion, pride, and potential all come together,” says Sheat. “These players represent not just their schools, but their communities, and the competition plays a vital role in developing both athletes and people. It’s an exciting time for rugby across Canterbury.”

The 2026 season follows a memorable 2025 campaign, headlined by a gripping final between Christchurch Boys’ High School and Christs College. Played in tough, muddy conditions at Christchurch Boys’, the match delivered a classic contest, with Christchurch Boys’ being clinical in wet conditions to claim the title.

Defending champions Christchurch Boys’ High return with confidence and continuity, according to Coach Mike Drury.

“The Christchurch Boys' High 1st XV is excited as they head into the 2026 season as the defending champion,” says Drury. “There is a strong core of players returning from 2025, with the team to be led by third year player and openside flanker Jonty Leary.

“The team are looking forward to a strong, competitive competition this year. We have strengths across the park and, with a strong backline featuring second year players in Kaci Heath, Sonny Bill McAndrew, Dougal Grant and Will Brown, you can expect some enterprising and expansive play.

“We were also incredibly proud to be named School of the Year in 2025. Rugby continues to thrive at Christchurch Boys’, and we’ll field 21 teams across the grades this season, which speaks to the strength of the programme.”

Long-standing competition partner Miles Toyota continues to play a key role in supporting the growth of school rugby across the region. Mark Mills, CEO of Miles Toyota says the partnership reflects a shared commitment to community and development.

“At Miles Toyota, we’re proud to support the First XV Premiership because of what it represents,” says Mills. “School rugby is such an important part of the rugby pathway in Canterbury. It’s where young players learn discipline, teamwork, and resilience- values that carry well beyond the field.

“As a community partner of Canterbury Rugby, we see this competition as an investment in the future- not just of the game, but of the people and communities that make it so special.”

As the First XV Premiership kicks off, so too does the wider junior and teenage competitions in clubs and schools across Canterbury. From first-time players pulling on their boots to seasoned school leavers chasing Premiership glory, the start of the season signals a return to fields, friendships, and the unmistakable spirit of rugby.

With another season of high-quality competition ahead, the Miles Toyota First XV Premiership is once again set to deliver the intensity, skill, and passion that define the very best of schoolboy rugby.
