Crusaders in Clubs Brings Communities Together!

Grassroots rugby was alive and well across the region on Monday as more than 300 young players pulled on their boots for a special community initiative designed to bring rugby heroes straight to the heart of local clubs.

Delivered in partnership with the Crusaders, these events create an opportunity for junior players from across the region to connect with some of the game’s biggest names. Open to all junior rugby players, it gave tamariki the chance to train, learn, and share the field with players they usually only see in stadiums or on TV. Each sub-union got their share — with Metro hosted by Christchurch Football Club, Ellesmere at Rolleston Rugby Football Club, and North Canterbury welcoming players at Saracens Rugby Club.

Led by Canterbury Rugby’s experienced resource coaches, more than 30 contracted Canterbury and Crusaders players also jumped straight into the action with the next generation.
Over a 90-minute session, tamariki moved through skills and drills, asked questions, grabbed autographs and snapped photos with their rugby idols.

The Rolleston hub also welcomed players from Matatu off the back of their training at Lincoln, giving our young wāhine a chance to see strong female role models up close and in action.

Canterbury Rugby Game Developer Niko Masirewa who leading the charge at CFC said the evening perfectly captured for him what community rugby is all about.
“We’ve got an awesome team of resource coaches, and being able to deliver events like these that connect our young players with these professional athletes is incredibly special,” he said. “Giving kids something to strive towards and role models to look up to is what keeps them in the game.”

While the day began with a crisp and very wet taste of autumn in the 03, that didn’t stop families from turning out in force, and by the end of the evening the rain had eased and even a little sunshine appeared.

For many of the professional players involved, it was about reconnecting with the grassroots system that helped shape their own journeys. A large number grew up playing club rugby across Christchurch and Canterbury, making the chance to return and give back especially meaningful. And it wasn’t just the younger or newer players lending a hand. The likes of Codie Taylor — a true Canterbury legend — were also out on the field sharing tips and running drills with players who, in some cases, barely reached his knees.

According to Canterbury Rugby Club Capabilities Manager Vaughan Utteridge, these moments are what make the connection between grassroots and the professional game so powerful. “The players are amazing and I think it’s connections like these that really show they want to give back to the clubs and be a part of growing the game at grassroots level.”

Off the field, the community atmosphere was just as strong, with clubs firing up their kitchens and sausage sizzles while signatures went on everything from posters and flags, to the odd croc and even a few foreheads.

So what’s next? The fun doesn’t stop there.

We’re keeping the buzz going at the upcoming Crusaders vs Highlanders clash on 14 March at Apollo Projects Stadium, kicking off at 7:05pm.

All Junior rugby players should have received a ticket offer, so be sure to check your inbox.
