Canterbury Rugby Unveils Refreshed Brand Identity for a New Era

Canterbury Rugby has officially unveiled a refreshed brand identity, marking an exciting new chapter for one of New Zealand rugby’s most historic and recognisable organisations.

As we prepare to enter One NZ Stadium and launch into the 2026 season, our refreshed identity reflects both the proud heritage of the red and black and the future of rugby in the region.

Founded in 1879, Canterbury Rugby’s history stretches nearly 150 years- a legacy built by generations of players, supporters, clubs, schools, volunteers and communities right across the region.

And with that history comes responsibility.

“After nearly 150 years- with a history this engrained- you don’t change things lightly,” said Canterbury Rugby CEO Tony Smail.

The refreshed identity has been designed as an evolution, not a revolution. A refined crest that strengthens and modernises the brand while remaining deeply connected to the history, pride and traditions that have shaped Canterbury Rugby for generations.

At the centre of the refreshed identity is the Canterbury Rugby crest, which draws its origins from the early Canterbury Province coat of arms. The refined design continues to reflect the history, whakapapa and foundations of the region, while being reshaped for the next generation.

For the first time, Canterbury Rugby’s founding year- 1879- sits proudly at the top of the crest, anchoring the identity in the organisation’s rich history and recognising Canterbury’s role in the game from the very beginning.

The chevron element has also been refined to form a maunga shape on a 43-degree angle, reflecting the latitude of Canterbury and symbolising the Southern Alps that stand over the region. Beneath it, three bold stripes represent both the Canterbury Plains and Canterbury Rugby’s three sub unions- Ellesmere, Metro and North Canterbury.

Elements synonymous with Canterbury’s history also remain embedded within the crest, including the wheat, plough and fleece- acknowledging the whenua and agricultural foundations that helped shape both the province and the game within it.

Importantly, Canterbury Rugby says the refresh is about creating an identity that the entire rugby community can stand behind- from grassroots rugby through to the elite level, from long-standing supporters to the next generation pulling on the red and black for the first time.

“This is not about changing who we are,” said Smail.

“This is about being clear in who we are, what we stand for, where we come from and where we’re going together.

“Canterbury Rugby has always been bigger than what happens on the field. It belongs to the clubs, schools, volunteers, families, supporters, players and communities that make rugby in this region what it is.

“As we move into One NZ Stadium and into a new era for the game in Canterbury, this was an opportunity to create an identity that reflects our whole community- something people across the region can feel proud to stand behind.”

The refreshed identity will now roll out across Canterbury Rugby’s teams, communications, merchandise and match day experience as the organisation enters a new era at One NZ Stadium- a new home for the game and a place for the wider Canterbury community to come together through a shared passion for rugby.

Built on history. Refined for the future. Moving forward with pride, as Canterbury Rugby.
