The South Island U16 Tournament delivered three days of fast, physical and exciting representative rugby this week, with 16 teams from across the South Island coming together at Waihora Rugby Club.
With close to 400 young players involved, the tournament provided a valuable opportunity for players to test themselves against the best of their age group, while taking an important first step on the representative pathway as they look to compete for their province.
The tournament featured four pools, with teams playing their opening matches before being ranked and progressing through quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals across the three-day event.
Canterbury was well represented, with Ellesmere, North Canterbury, Metro Black and Metro Red, joined by a Barbarians team made up of players from around the region to fill the bye.
The tournament got underway on Sunday with plenty of action, including wins for Metro Black, Metro Red, North Canterbury and Otago Country. The Barbarians then bounced back on Monday with an emphatic 83–7 win over West Coast, while North Canterbury also progressed with a 29–20 victory over North Otago.
The Cup semi-finals saw an all-Canterbury clash looming, with Metro Black defeating Southland 29–21 and Metro Red overcoming Nelson Bays 46–26.
Tuesday brought the tournament to a thrilling conclusion, with Metro Black and Metro Red meeting in the U16 Cup Final.
The final was a fast and furious Canterbury affair, with plenty of attacking rugby, great tries and an intensity that reflected the talent on display. With teammates and friends lining up against each other, it was a true mate-against-mate battle, with Metro Black eventually claiming the title 33–24.
Away from the field, the tournament was just as impressive. More than 1,000 spectators attended each day, with families and supporters creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the school holiday event. An army of volunteers from Waihora worked tirelessly behind the scenes, while junior players stepped up as ball boys and girls across the three days.
Canterbury Rugby Community Manager Michael Sheat said it was a privilege to host the tournament in Canterbury.
“It’s a privilege to be hosting in our own backyard and an awesome opportunity for young players to have friends and family supporting them. A huge thank you to Waihora for hosting, it’s their third year and it continues to get better.
“We’re incredibly grateful to have such a great group of volunteers, along with our Canterbury Rugby Community Team, who make these events successful.”
With great weather, a brilliant atmosphere and plenty of rugby played in the right spirit, the South Island U16 Tournament once again proved a highlight of the sporting calendar for these young men.
For many, it marks the beginning of their representative journey and an opportunity to put their skills on display as they aim to represent their province in the future.
The players now return to their clubs and schools, with the next chapter of their rugby journey waiting in 2027.
