And with a huge club season kicking off in April, there’s never been a better time to be part of the Canterbury rugby community. Whether you’re brand new to the game, returning for another season, or keen to get back into rugby after some time away, there’s a position on the team for everyone, and registrations are open now.

Club rugby across Canterbury Rugby Football Union is built on inclusion, opportunity, and community. With a wide range of grades available across Junior, Senior, Women and Girls, U85kg, Classics, Tri Rugby. There truly is a team to suit everyone. Community Rugby Manager Michael Sheat says the diversity of competitions is something Canterbury is incredibly proud of. “We pride ourselves in having options that cater to everyone, whether it's contact or non-contact, Wednesday nights or Saturdays — there's a club that will be the right fit for you.”

Rugby at grassroots level is about far more than what happens on the scoreboard. It’s about friendships formed in the changing room, shared victories, post-match conversations, and being part of something bigger. As Sheat puts it, “It’s more than just being part of a club,  it’s a community and creating a sense of belonging by connecting through the sport we love.” That sense of community is what keeps players, volunteers, coaches, referees, and families coming back year after year.

Contrary to common belief, participation numbers remain strong. In fact, 2025 player numbers were up, particularly in the women and girls space, which had an impressive 15% growth across those grades. This continued momentum highlights the strength of grassroots rugby and the exciting direction the game is heading in Canterbury.

This is shaping up to be a very exciting year for red and black rugby. With anticipation building and April fast approaching, clubs across the region are gearing up for another memorable season. Now is the time to get involved.
