It’s been another busy couple of weeks in Community Rugby as we wrap up the 15s side of the season and look ahead to what’s on the horizon.

Tri Rugby International Fixture
Our Canterbury TRI Rugby teams, High School Old Boys, Ohoka, and Prebbleton all came together at HSOB Rugby Club for two exciting clashes against the Southern Lions All Ability Rugby Team from Perth, Australia. It was a brilliant showcase of inclusion, teamwork, and the incredible abilities of all players. With the sun shining and plenty of supporters cheering from the sidelines, the atmosphere was nothing short of special. A huge thank you to everyone who came along to support, and be sure to check out the action shots on the TRI Rugby Canterbury Facebook page.

Canterbury B Men’s
Our Canterbury B side wrapped up their four-match campaign with a strong win over Tasman B at Christchurch Park. The team finishing with two wins and two losses across their fixtures:

Southland B 24 – Canterbury B 32

Wellington B 69 – Canterbury B 47

Otago B 38 – Canterbury B 35

Canterbury B 59 – Tasman B 26

Under 18 Girls
We were proud to see our two Canterbury Under 18 Girls teams competing at the South Island U18 Girls Tournament in Timaru from 21–23 September. The Canterbury Black Girls came away as South Island Champions, defeating Otago 51–5 in the final! Our Canterbury Red Girls also put in strong performances throughout, finishing in fourth place after a tough battle with Hanan Shields XV.

Under 16 Boys
Five Canterbury sub-union sides — Ellesmere, Metro Black, Metro Red, North Canterbury, and Waitaha — all enjoyed the experience of tournament rugby at the South Island U16 Boys Tournament, held 28–30 September at Rhodes Park Domain and Waihora RFC in Tai Tapu.
A huge thank you goes to Waihora RFC and their volunteers for putting on such an outstanding event. Our Canterbury teams finished with the following placings:

2nd – Metro Black
4th – Metro Red
8th – Ellesmere
10th – North Canterbury
15th – Waitaha

What’s Next?

While the representative season has come to an end, there’s still plenty of action ahead.

Waitaha Rugby are hosting the Te Waipounamu Māori Rangatahi Ahurei at Kaiapoi RFC tomorrow, Saturday 4 October, with matches running from 10am all day. 18 teams from across Te Waipounamu are coming together for a festival of rugby.

We are also moving into the Sevens season, with a range of youth tournaments happening throughout October. Our Canterbury Club 7s tournament (Men’s,Women’s, and Under 85kg grades) will take place on the first weekend of November. Get in touch with your club if you’re keen to get involved.

It’s been fantastic seeing so many of our teams and communities represent Canterbury proudly these past few weeks, and we’re looking forward to an action-packed finish to 2025!
