As our community season hits the pointy end, there's still plenty of opportunity to get out and enjoy some incredible club, school, and representative rugby right across Canterbury.
Over the past fortnight, we’ve seen the conclusion of the Miles Toyota Premiership and Championship, with Christchurch Boys’ High School taking out the Premiership title and Timaru Boys’ High School claiming the Championship crown.
In South Island Secondary School playoffs, CBHS went down in a tight 29–32 battle against Southland Boys’ High, while Christchurch Girls' High School stormed to a 72–5 victory over St Hilda's Collegiate. CGHS now progress to the Top 4 National Playoffs – best of luck to the girls as they chase national honours!
Out in Ellesmere, the annual Junior 7s Day was a huge success, with 92 teams taking part in a fantastic festival of rugby. A massive shoutout to Ellesmere Rugby for putting on such a great day — this kind of festival-style event is definitely something worth expanding on next season!
Representative Rugby is in full swing, with the Tane Norton Trophy entering the penultimate round tomorrow. The Canterbury Cavaliers will host Ellesmere at Tane Norton Park, while Canterbury Pasifika take on North Canterbury at Burnside Park. All eyes will then turn to the final round and the much-anticipated Southbridge Shield clash — the ultimate showdown for country rugby supremacy between old foes North Canterbury and Ellesmere.
Our Canterbury Under 19s have kicked off their campaign in style with solid wins over Wellington and Otago. Next up: the South Island Under 19 Tournament at Nga Puna Wai, running from 6th–8th September — mark your calendars!
Meanwhile, club and school rugby continues in Metro, with a massive Finals Day across all grades tomorrow. Best of luck to every team competing, and congratulations to all the match officials appointed for these important games. Let’s enjoy the matches — and while there’s silverware on the line, please remember to Keep it Positive on the sidelines and on the field.
Metro Junior Grades have two more weeks of action left — here’s hoping all our Tamariki finish the season with big smiles and great memories!
This Sunday, we’re excited to host a Girls’ Rugby Festival Day at Burnside Park, bringing together a heap of teams to finish the season in style. As an added bonus, all players involved have received free tickets to the FPC match at Rugby Park tomorrow. A huge weekend of rugby ahead for these young stars!
The National Under 85kg Club Cup is heating up, with several Canterbury teams still in the mix. In Round 3, Waihora and Oxford will battle it out tonight at 7:30pm at Waihora — a true lightweight showdown with a spot in the Cup Quarter-Finals on the line. Already through are the HSOB Light Bears, who are set to face Avalon in Wellington.
Enjoy the weekend – there’s loads of community rugby to get around. Let’s get out there and support our teams!
