The history of the College game

This weekend’s Miles Toyota Championship match between Christchurch Boys’ High School and Christ’s College remains one of the most highly anticipated matches on the year’s rugby calendar, with history and pride combined to create 70 minutes of high octane and intensity rugby.

Taking place Friday the 27th at Orangetheory Stadium alongside the Crusaders final round robin match against the Reds, the 137th clash promises to be no different to it’s long and storied past.

Since their first fixture in 1892, which Christ’s College won 34-0, Boys’ High have been the more successful of the two sides, winning 84 times to Christ’s 43, while there have been only nine draws.

The match has also been home to many of Canterbury’s future All Blacks, with Dan Carter, Bill Dalley, Robbie Deans and Jock Hobbs all a part of previous fixtures just to name a few.

Following Boys’ High’s record run of wins from 2001 till 2016, the results have been fairly even, with the last five years seeing three Christ’s wins to Boys’ High’s two.

Last year, Christ’s College were able to leave Straven Rd victorious, winning a 35-34 thriller with the lead ebbing and flowing throughout the game.

This Friday, the two groups of supporters will be bringing their best in order to spur their team on, with Boys’ High taking over the North Stand and Christ’s in the South.

With Boys’ High at the top of the table after three rounds, they will be very keen to ensure their good start to the season is not ruined not just by a loss, but one that they won’t hear the end of until they meet again next year.
