Poihipi looking to mark a successful personal season with silverware

Rameka Poihipi has been a staple in the Canterbury side this season, featuring in every game so far apart from the midweek encounter with North Harbour, making a key contributor to the teams’ final run.

The 24-year-old has been a fulcrum in the #12 jersey, shown in the semi final with the linebreak that set up the winning try against Bay of Plenty, his father’s old team

However, Poihipi is not getting ahead of himself, with all eyes on this Saturday’s finals showpiece against Wellington.

“It’s pretty surreal to be preparing for a final this Saturday, only two teams get the chance to do that,” said Poihipi, “I’m very excited for the challenge”

Like others in the squad this season, Poihipi has enjoyed his time back in Canterbury, revelling in the fun and inclusive team environment that has been on show throughout the Bunnings NPC season.

“The people in this environment are awesome, they make so enjoyable to be here (at Rugby Park) each day” Poihipi said.

“Not many people can say that they get to go to work everyday with your mates, playing the sport that you love so it’s pretty cool.”

Looking towards this weekend’s final, Poihipi is aware of the threats present throughout a strong Wellington side.

“They’ve got weapons across the park, there’s no question about that. They've got a lot of powerful ball carriers and a bit of razzle outside, so it’ll be a bloody good challenge!”
